Howard House School, part of Howard House Care, is an independent day special school catering for pupils with SEBD. It is co-educational and can accept up to ten pupils aged between 11 and 16 years.

The bulk of our population has been from Howard House residential children’s home although some of the residents have been maintained in the school they are in or have been attending prior to their move into the home.

During the last few years we have had pupils who do not live in the home but attend daily. We feel we are well equipped and able to work with pupils in public care, having ongoing experience of the inter agency working around such pupils.

Our Vision, Ethos & Values

Howard House School aims to encourage intellectual curiosity, critical perception and respect for learning. We strongly encourage individual responsibility, self-esteem and confidence as well as care, concern and respect for others.

"Pupils value what the school provides for them and the positive relationships they have with teachers and other staff. When asked what he likes about the school, by the inspector, a pupil replied, ‘What is there not to like?’

We believe it is our duty to promote the development of personal values to help meet the challenges of a complex world and to encourage a commitment to contributing positively to the community and wider society.

“Trust underpins the strong relationships that exist between staff and pupils. The good social skills modelled by staff permeate throughout the school. This helps pupils build their self-esteem and interact positively with others”

To do this we provide appropriate challenge and accreditation opportunities to develop the personal resources necessary to be happy and successful in a complex world.

We would like all our students to respect and celebrate the differences between people and to question reasonably but to treat with compassion and understanding the position of others. Our students are encouraged to be flexible thinkers and to become life-long learners.

Our Individual Programmes

To date, pupils have all come under the Looked After Children remit as well as having a statement of Special Educational Need.

What we then do is to ensure that the targets set in the Personal Education Plan are consistent with the Individual Education Plan so ensuring that the pupil and those involved in their care and education, are moving towards shared and consistent goals.

In terms of learning, our pupils, prior to arriving at Howard House School, have usually had poor educational experience, be that through their own chosen non-attendance, or a history of disrupted schooling.

Engaging pupils in learning is the first step and then delivering opportunities for them to pursue courses that they are prepared to engage with is the second.

For some this has meant having specialist staff come in to support them, for others it has been attending a local skill centre or specified vocational training.

Being a small school, and seeking to remain a small school, the high level of support and care is probably unrivalled within the region.
